    Know Your Why 
    Start by understanding why you want to make the change. Is it for better work-life balance, higher pay, or more fulfillment? Knowing your why will keep you motivated during the transition.     Explore Potential Careers 
    Don’t jump ship without knowing where you’re headed. I’m not anti-spontaneity, but as someone who once left a job with ZERO plan other than moving internationally, I can tell you it’s about as smart as skydiving without a parachute. Can it be done? Yes. Will you survive in your career? Probably. Skydiving… I fear there is a splat coming! Trust me, take a pause, plan your next steps, and save the spontaneous moves for your impromptu karaoke sessions—cue “I Will Survive”. Research potential careers that align with your skills and interests.     Create a Transition Plan 
    You know what they say: fail to plan, plan to fail. Proper planning prevents poor outcomes. Develop a detailed plan that outlines the steps you need to take to transition smoothly. This plan should include timelines, necessary skills to acquire, and financial considerations. Remember, a well-thought-out plan can alleviate a lot of the anxiety associated with career transitions.   3. Skill Up and Network

    Acquire Necessary Skills 
    Identify the skills you need for your new career and start acquiring them. There’s been a major shift towards valuing skills and experience over just having another degree or certification. Employers are now looking for candidates who can demonstrate their abilities through real-world experience. Going back to school isn’t the only option anymore—think online courses, certifications, volunteering, secondments, role shadowing…the list goes on. Platforms like Coursera, LinkedIn Learning, and Udemy offer a wide range of courses to help you upskill. So, roll up your sleeves and get learning!

    Leverage Your Network 
    Networking is crucial during a career transition. Reach out to professionals in your desired field for informational interviews. Join industry-specific groups on LinkedIn and attend relevant events. According to LinkedIn, 85% of jobs are filled through networking, so don’t underestimate the power of a strong network. You never know—your barista’s wife’s second cousin, twice removed, could be the key to your next move. Remember, the world operates on six degrees of separation, and proximity is power.

  4. Seek Guidance and Support

    Find a Mentor 
    A mentor who has experience in your desired field can provide invaluable guidance and support. They can help you navigate the transition, offer advice, and introduce you to key contacts. Mentors can be informal or formal, from within your organization or outside of it. Sometimes, mentors are the podcasts we listen to, the blogs we read (hello, it’s me—I can be your mentor!). We’ve been conditioned to believe mentoring can only happen in intimate one-to-one sessions, but don’t discount group approaches like masterminds, peer groups, and professional forums.
